The Fading Dusk by Melissa Giorgio
(Smoke and Mirrors, #1)
Publication date: July 19th 2015
Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult

Synopsis:
In the gritty city of Dusk, seventeen-year-old Irina makes her living as the street magician Bantheir’s assistant. The job isn’t glamorous, but she loves the crowds, the shows, and most of all, the illusion of magic. But Irina’s world is shattered the night she is arrested and charged as Bantheir’s accomplice to murder—murder by magic.
Real magic, the kind that’s been forbidden since the old wars.
Irina finds the idea of flashy showman Bantheir using actual magic to kill someone laughable, but she’s the only one who sees how ridiculous the claim is. But how can she convince everyone Bantheir is innocent when they’ve already made up their minds? Desperate, Irina must decide who she can trust to help her win her freedom. Is the surly, handsome Captain Leonid telling the truth when he says he believes Irina is innocent, or is he just using her to get to Bantheir? What about Aden, the sweet soldier and longtime fan of Irina’s who claims he’s on her side?
Irina said she wanted to know the truth, but when she stumbles across a dark secret that changes everything, will she be strong enough to survive?

My Review

I haven't read this author before, but this book has changed that from her on out. I absolutely loved this one. It all starts out with an orphaned girl, who is taken in by a magician, or illusionist as we know in this time, until she is arrested for murder as his accomplice. Ok, so that doesn't really catch anything awe inspiring, BUT, let me tell you, this illusionist is a real wizard here. I don't know how he kept it a secret so well because even I fell for it. And the girl, she's not just some scared orphan, or not at the end anyways, and being in prison, not the worst place to be, with nice guards and a hawt captain. Well, at the end anyways. LOL  I can only take this into account that the author made such a wonderful story, and wrote it so well, that I just fell in love with it. It's got a beautiful world building, based not on fantasy, but reality, but from the past.

Irina is our leading lady. She was taken in by Bantheir as a child, and has been his assistant ever since. He has fed her, clothed her, sheltered her, and though more like an older brother, or uncle, he was there for her when she lost everything at 4 years old. And upon being attacked by unknown men, she is saved by them in return to be arrested for Bantheir's murdering spree. She didn't believe he was ever guilty until too many things added up. She stayed loyal until it was almost too late. But along the way, she made friends, which she's never had before. The Captain Leonid, the guard Vernen, even Aden, and the rival other street magician and his assistant. This helped her stand on her own, face the truth, and in turn, deal with the path she needed to take. And if I can have on spoiler, just one little one, I need to say this.... There's an awesome creature in here!!!!!!!

There are excellent characters in here, the captain, which started out as an enemy and became ally, the guards Aden and Vernen, Bantheir, who was most trusted then turned to enemy. I loved the changes and how exceptionally well they grew in this story. And I know it's only the beginning because now I'm dying to get my hands on book two!! The location of this story is awesome and so descriptive as well, the rich side, the middle side, the poor side. They all feel like completely different cities which is what I think is supposed to feel like. And the plot twists and ending, I loved that too. It's shows just how much things can change and especially Irina, who became a heroine, though she did everything she could to not. So with that said, I recommend this to anyone who would like a good fantasy story with so many good things in it! 5 MAGICAL PAWS!
