Summary from Goodreads:

~Becoming a winter queen will make Ilyenna as cold and cruel and deadly as winter itself, but it might be the only way to save her people from a war they have no hope of winning.~

Mortally wounded during a raid, seventeen-year-old Ilyenna is healed by winter fairies who present her with a seductive offer: become one of them and share their power over winter. But that power comes with a price. If she accepts, she will become a force of nature, lose her humanity, and abandon her family.

Unwilling to pay such a high price, Ilyenna is enslaved by one of the invaders, Darrien. While in captivity, she learns the attack wasn’t just a simple raid but part of a larger plot to overthrow her entire nation.

With the enemy stealing over the mountains and Darrien coming to take her to his bed, Ilyenna must decide whether to resurrect the power the fairies left behind. Doing so will allow her to defeat Darrien and the other invaders, but if she embraces winter, she will lose herself to that destroying power—forever.

My Review

This book was an amazing start to a new series! It's a beautifully heart wrenching story set in a fantasy land where faeries are real but not everyone can see them. We start with Ilyenna who is 17 and the mistress of her clan. That means she's a leading lady, her father being clan chief, she's also a healer. But attacks on her neighboring clan, her friends, mean her people are going to war. And Ilyenna will be in a tug of war for many different reasons. One is the bad clan starting everything wants her because if the son of the chief married her, he'll het claim of her clan- specifically her land. And they are evil people and like to kill and torture. The second tug of war is Ilyenna's caught between being loyal to her clan or saving her self and her family. The last is when she is saved from death by faeries, she has to make a big choice, live and save lives but lose her humanity. It's complicated. And Ilyenna is a magnificent leading character to follow. She's also in love with her brother's bestie from another clan, who are under attack. She was naive about a lot of things and her choices reflected that. Which made for a lot of bad decisions. But she really was trying to make the best choice based on the info she had to try to help everyone. She lost several people and almost lost herself. Her love wants to protect her, but thinks he's not good enough for her, which causes a lot of miscommunication. His mother is the mistress of the clan attacked and tries her hardest to keep everyone safe. And the bad guys, well Darrien is scary. And full of torture and meanness. I seriously cringed many times.

I gotta give the author major props on creating the best villain I've read in a while with Darrien. I was frustrated with all the politics and of course men who like to rub their noses in the sand when they are needed yet love to talk about nothing. And there's a good bit of characters and pretense I'd love to have more backstory or elaboration on. But overall, this is starting the series so I hope the future books add to this world! I enjoyed it!! 4.25 PAWS!!
